Botox
What is Botox?
Botox is a popular treatment derived from botulinum toxin, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. The Botox brand, produced by Allergan, was first approved by the FDA in the late 1980s. It was discovered to be an effective treatment for medical conditions like blepharospasm (uncontrolled blinking) and strabismus (lazy eye). Over time, cosmetic dermatologists have successfully used Botox to treat wrinkles and facial lines, making it one of today’s most common cosmetic procedures.
Botox works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions. By relaxing these muscles, the overlying wrinkles soften, creating a smoother appearance. Studies have shown that regular Botox treatments can help train the muscles to contract less frequently, preventing deeper, more permanent wrinkles from forming.
The effects of Botox are not immediate. Patients typically begin seeing improvements between 48 and 72 hours after injection, with continued improvement reaching full effect around 2 weeks later. Results typically last 3-4 months and wear off gradually; maintaining regularly scheduled treatments allows patients to maintain their desired results.
Botox is a safe procedure with minimal discomfort that almost all patients tolerate. Patients can return to most of their normal activities immediately after the procedure. Bruising can sometimes occur (more frequent in those taking blood thinners), but it is often small and easily concealable. Other side effects, such as a temporary drooping of an eyelid, are uncommon.
Botox can address several areas of concern, including:
- Frown lines, worry lines, or “eleven lines”
- Forehead wrinkles
- Crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes)
- Bunny lines (on the nose)
- Lip flip (to provide a slightly fuller appearance)
- Vertical lip lines
- Downward slanting or asymmetric mouth corners
- Gummy smiles (showing gums when smiling)
- Jawline slimming/jaw clenching
- Chin wrinkling or dimpling
- Neck bands
When administered correctly, Botox can rejuvenate and rest your appearance, helping you look and feel your best. Studies have even shown that reducing your ability to make frowning expressions through the use of Botox can improve your mood.
